Finally, it’s over. Pokemon Go users won’t have to worry about the potential security risk.
The developer of the Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs, has acknowledged that it “erroneously” requested full access permission to users’ Google accounts on iOS and said that the team is working with Google to address this issue.
Users have only two options to sign into the widely popular game app, login information through the game’s website pokemon.com, or sign in with your Google credentials. Because of the immense popularity of the game, the Pokemon website currently under development and isn’t accepting new users. This leaves the user with only one option on the table, and that is using a Google account.

When iOS users sign into Pokemon Go through their Google account, it giving Niantic Labs not just access to the game itself but full access to their Google account, which includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Photos, and other Google features. And if the game developer chooses to do so, it has the ability to read your emails, send emails, and even view your search and browsing histories.
In a statement provided to technology new site Mashable, Niantic Labs said that the app “erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account,” but that no user information was compromised.
According to Niantic Labs, the game only accesses basic Google profile information (User ID and email address) and no other Google account information has been accessed or collected.
Niantic also added that Google was working with them so users won’t need to adjust their account settings to address the issue. Google will also reduce Pokemon G’s permission to only the basic profile data that the game needs.
Security experts have raised security concerns recently about the iOS version of Pokemon Go after they discovered that it required users to hand over unrestricted access to their Google accounts.
Niantic Labs is a Google spinoff company best known for developing the augmented reality mobile games Ingress and now Pokémon Go. The company utilizes high throughput real-time geospatial querying and indexing techniques to process more than 200 million game actions per day as people interact with real and virtual objects in the physical world.
Pokemon Go was officially released on July 6, 2016, and was available in Australia, New Zealand the US. A global roll-out is planned but was halted after the initial launch overwhelmed and crippled server.
