Pokemon GO’s buddy system is finally up and running for iOS and Android devices, ending weeks of anticipation for a lot of gamers. And it could not have come at a better time, since the app’s popularity has been waning, as of late. But with the new feature, Pokemon GO will be getting a breath of fresh air with more functionality and character in the game.
In a nutshell, Pokemon GO’s buddy system will allow gamers to have one of their Pokemon follow them around outside of their Pokeball, much like in the cartoon world of Ash. With this feature, players can also collect candies for their Pokemon buddy while walking, which can help trainers who are having trouble evolving their Pokemon.
So how do you activate it?
First off, make sure that you have the latest version of the app, which is 0.37 for Android and 1.7 on iOS. Make sure that your version was installed using the official App store and not through the APK file. If all is well, click (or tap) update to make sure you have the latest version.
Once all that is set, it’s time to see if you can access Pokemon GO’s buddy system! Tap on your avatar at the bottom left the corner of the screen and then look for the triple line icon. Select buddy and pick your favorite Pokemon from the list.
Check out the map and you should see your Pokemon beside your avatar at the bottom left corner of the screen. Tapping on the small icon lets you see your Pokemon either standing beside you or sitting on your shoulder (depending on their size).
In case you’re sick and tired of your buddy, you can easily change them by tapping on your trainer avatar and then clicking on the triple line again or by tapping on your avatar with the buddy Pokemon. On the next screen, simply tap the switch icon to reenter your list of Pokemon.
Pokemon GO’s buddy system: Be careful with candy
Remember that switching a buddy without acquiring a candy automatically nullifies any progress you made, otherwise, you can switch buddies as many times as you like.
The required distances acquire candy vary greatly among the Pokemon you are buddying(?) with, in increments of 1km, 3km and 5km for a single candy. For a complete list of the Pokemon and the required distance, check out the list here.
Lastly, to check the distance that you have walked, simply tap on your character’s avatar again and go through the buddy page. There you’ll find the distance you’ve gone and the distance you need to complete to get your Pokemon’s candy.
