Health: Five foods that increase the risk of developing cancer in our body

Cancer kills lots of people worldwide. It starts when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. Several factors may contribute to the development of cancer cells in our body. These include vices like alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking, radiation exposure, physical activities, and the foods we eat every day.

Food fuels the human body. Without it, the body cannot grow or perform at its best, the organs stop working properly, and the body eventually dies. Food supplies nutrients, which every cell in the body used as building materials and fuel. Some foods like fruits and vegetables do show cancer-fighting properties. However, others bring harmful effect in the body and may aid in the development of cancer cells.

Here are some of the cancer-causing foods you might be eating every day:

French Fries/ Potato Chips

Foods such as French fries and potato chips seem to have the highest levels of acrylamide. Acrylamide contributed in the development of cancer cells in the body. According to American Cancer Society, people used this chemical in certain industrial processes, such as in making paper, dyes, and plastics, and in treating drinking water and wastewater.

French Fries and potato chips are fried in hydrogenated vegetable oil and then heavily salted.  Hydrogenated oils contain trans fats, which raise the bad cholesterol in the body.

Processed Meats (bacon, hot dogs, sausages, ham, etc.)

Processed meats are modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste. The main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives. New research conducted at the University of Hawaii revealed that these types of food increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Soda and Carbonated Beverages

Drinking lots of soda or carbonated beverages may lead to a higher risk of developing rare cancers in the gallbladder and bile ducts around the liver, according to a Swedish study. These drinks contain 4-methylimidazole, the chemical that gives their caramel color. Research revealed that this chemical can increase the risk of developing cancer.

Farmed Fish

According to Environmental Working Group, farmed fish contain 16 times more carcinogenic chemicals than wild fish. This is because they are fed with contaminated fishmeals containing polychlorinated biphenyls. PCBs are cancer-causing chemicals. Experts advise to seek out wild fish whenever possible and be sure to check labels.

Refined Sugar and White Flour

When people who consume sugar and white flour, the body releases insulin accompanied by the release of Insulin-like growth factor to allow the glucose to enter the cells to stimulate cell growth. This triggers inflammation in the system which can essentially fertilize tumors. Research says that women who got more than 57% of their energy from carbs have 220% risk of developing breast cancer.
