Day of upsets in NCAA 1st round

Upsets everywhere marred the first day of March Madness.

While some of the higher seeds rolled along to the next round, others felt the upset axe. In the first day of March Madness, a pair of 12th seeded teams scored an upset on their 5th seeded opponents. In the history of the NCAA, 12th seeded teams have produced numerous upsets. Since 1985 when the tournament was expanded to 64, 46 12th seeded teams have scored upsets on fifth seeds. University of Arkansas-Little Rock and the Yale University Bulldogs joins that list.

University of Arkansas – Little Rock took out Purdue 85-83 in two overtimes to advance in the Midwest Region. On the other hand, Ivy League champion Yale University makes it to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1962, overcoming a furious last-minute run by 5th seed Baylor 79-75 to advance to the next round of the West region.

Meanwhile, three ninth seeded teams scored mini-upsets against their eight seeded opponents. In the South region, the University of Connecticut Huskies toppled Colorado Buffaloes 74-67. In the East region, 9th seeded Providence College Friars beat 8th seeded University of Southern California Trojans, 70-69. In the Midwest, 9th seeded Butler easily defeated 8th seeded Texas Tech 71-61.

Other upsets for the day had 11th seeded Wichita State Shockers defeated 6th seed Arizona Wildcats 65-55 in their South regional opening match. The Shockers used a stifling defense to force the Wildcats to commit 19 turnovers. In the Midwest region, 11th seeded Gonzaga powered themselves to a 68-52 win over Seton Hall. The Pirates hit only 20 of 62 field goals and made only 38 percent of their free throws and 19 percent of their three pointers.

Meanwhile, in other games, Kansas easily waylaid Austin Peay 105-79, 3rd seed Miami Hurricanes survived 14th seed Buffalo 79-72. In the East, The Tar Heels defeated 16th seed Florida Gulf Coast 83-67. Fourth seeded Kentucky had little trouble beating Stony Brook 85-57 and 5th seeded Indiana advanced easily beating Chattanooga 99-74. In the Midwest, top seeded Virginia demolished 16th seed Hampton 81-45 while the Iowa State Cyclones rolled over 13th seed Iona 94-81.
