The Boston Red Sox are surging at the moment as they have maintained their place as the best team in the American League with a 32-21. According to the latest MLB rumors, the Red Sox could use additional pitching in their rotation and they are now linked with Rich Hill, who they might acquire from the Oakland Athletics.

Boston has been producing a lot of runs in the past couple of weeks but their pitching is still suspect. The team has a 4.13 ERA and their prized free agent signing of the offseason is struggling. David Price, who was signed a seven-year, $217 million, has an ERA of 5.11 in 11 starts this season.

The Red Sox also demoted Clay Buchholz to the bullpen, and Eduardo Rodriguez and Sean O’Sullivan are not long-term answers. Ryan Fagan of Sporting News suggested acquiring three-time Red Sox left-handed pitcher Rich Hill from the Athletics.

After making his first MLB start in six years last season in Boston, Hill signed a one-year, $6 million deal in Oakland. He is having a very good season with the Athletics with a 2.25 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 11 starts this year.

Oakland is not a favorite to make the playoffs and they are known sellers every year. They will probably want a good prospect for the resurgent their 36-year-old starting pitcher.

Fagan also mentioned Jeremy Hellickson of the Philadelphia Phillies and Scott Feldman of the Houston Astros as possible trade candidates. Both pitchers are going to be free agents at the end of the 2016 MLB season.

Other MLB Rumors: Chicago White Sox to acquire James Shields from Padres?

On the other hand, Boston can also revisit the discussion for San Diego Padres starter James Shields. It was rumored earlier in the season that the Red Sox were open to trading Pablo Sandoval to acquire Shields.

Nonetheless, these are all just rumors at the moment but expect Dave Dombrowski to be busy before the deadline. The Red Sox are legitimate contenders and they just need an additional arm or two to strengthen their roster.
