Jose Bautista is still a free agent despite being one of the big names available in the market. The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in bringing him back but there is a new team lurking. According to the latest report, the Tampa Bay Rays could steal Bautista from the Blue Jays.
Tampa Bay Rays interested in Jose Bautista
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (h/t ESPN) reported that the Rays remain interested in the 36-year-old slugger. There are potential obstacles in a possible deal for asking price and the Rays forfeiting a first-round pick.
However, Bautista has a house in Tampa Bay which makes playing with the Rays more appealing. There is also the fact that he could be motivated in playing against his former team and AL rivals at the comfort of his own home.
Jose Bautista not going to Baltimore or Boston
According to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, the Orioles and Red Sox are out of the running in the Bautista sweepstakes. The Orioles had an interest in the All-Star right fielder but their fans were against it so they decided not to pursue.
On the other hand, the Red Sox had an offer to Bautista but he turned it down. It was not close to his asking price of five-year, $85 million. Boston decided to sign Mitch Moreland to a one-year deal instead.
Toronto is the likely destination for Jose Bautista
The likely landing spot for Joey Bats is the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Blue Jays are only willing to give him an annual salary not higher than $17.2 million. Bautista has no other choice since the market for him is not as big as he expected it to be.
