The feud between former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg failed to reach the Octagon after “Rowdy” ended her reign at UFC 193. Despite their bitter history, Cyborg still has some respect for Rousey and has given her credit for putting women’s mixed-martial-arts (MMA) on the map.
“I never hated Ronda,” Cyborg said. “She’s always talked about me, she did that to promote herself because when she started nobody knew her, and she talked about me for people to know who she is. And she opened the doors for women’s MMA.”
During “Rowdy’s” reign as an UFC champ, talks about a potential super fight against Cris Cyborg has been a hot commodity in the world of MMA. Before facing Cat Zingano at UFC 182, Ronda Rousey vowed to kill Cyborg with her bare hands once they face each other in the Octagon. Cyborg just laughed with Rousey’s threat and challenged to fight her at 140 lbs.
UFC 193 marked the start of the downfall of Rousey’s MMA career after losing the belt to Holly Holm. “Rowdy” rested for almost one year before she decided to fight again in the Octagon. UFC president Dana White let her fight at UFC 207 against the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.
Before UFC 207, the promotion decided to create a women’s featherweight division. The UFC planned to set a rematch between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm, provided that both fighters win their respective bouts. Unfortunately, the rematch didn’t happen after both Rousey and Holm lost.
Cris Cyborg vs Ronda Rousey unlikely to happen
The UFC created the featherweight division with Cris Cyborg in mind. As what most people are thinking, the UFC wants to make the Rousey-Cyborg super fight happen. Cyborg thinks that a fight between her and Rousey would be the biggest fight in the history of women’s MMA.
“I think me and her fight is the biggest fight ever, but after she lost two fights… I really knew she cannot take a punch. And the fight is never gonna happen and never happened before because she knows what’s gonna happen,” said Cris via MMA Fighting. “And a lot of people know what’s gonna happen. Same thing Amanda did, I’m gonna do worse. And everybody knows this, and this fight never happened.”
Now that she’s cleared to fight again, Cris Cyborg called out UFC featherweight champ Germaine de Randamie for a title fight. However, de Randamie will undergo a surgery which could delay her first title defense. Cyborg suggests Invicta FC interim featherweight champion Megan Anderson be her next opponent.
