UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson called out Nate Diaz to fight him for the interim lightweight title after his canceled UFC 209 bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Unfortunately, Diaz doesn’t seem to be interested in granting his request. As most people think, he’s only waiting for one man to get inside the Octagon – Conor McGregor.
The rivalry between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor started at UFC 196. Diaz served as a replacement for Rafael dos Anjos. To everyone’s surprise, Diaz defeated McGregor via submission in the second round. McGregor immediately requested a rematch which took place at UFC 202.
“The Notorious” settled his score with Diaz after winning via unanimous decision. Most people expect a trilogy bout to happen but the UFC forced McGregor to fight other opponents first. Since then, Diaz wasn’t seen in action in the Octagon and revealed that he’s only interested in fighting McGregor.
Diaz vs Ferguson will excite Conor McGregor to make UFC return
McGregor decided to prioritize his upcoming superfight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. than fighting in the Octagon. Audie Attar, Tony Ferguson’s manager, believes that the interim lightweight title fight between “El Cucuy” and Nate Diaz will excite McGregor to return to the UFC.
“The Nate Diaz fight interests him,” Attar told Ariel Helwani during an appearance on The MMA Hour (via Daily Star). “And you gotta get Conor excited. If you want Conor to be excited about you, you better go in there and fight if you want to fight him in the future. So the thing is Nate and Tony for the title, that creates a narrative. So if Nate really thinks he’s worthy of it, he A, gets to fight for a title and B, if he thinks he’s worthy of it, one of those two guys has to come out victorious. And both of them want to make Conor excited and want the fight.”
Conor McGregor defending title after Mayweather fight
After fighting Mayweather, the UFC will oblige Conor McGregor to make his first title defense. If Diaz wants to fight McGregor as soon as possible, he should consider fighting Tony Ferguson and win the interim lightweight belt.
“If this thing happens with Floyd, you got to get Conor excited to get back in there with you. That’s just the reality of it. So I think from an opportunity standpoint, Nate would be foolish not to consider taking Tony on for the interim title fight,” Attar said.
