Germaine de Randamie succeeded in defeating Holly Holm at UFC 208 to become the new undisputed UFC featherweight champion. However, for Holm, the outcome of the fight was controversial and she believes that de Randamie should give her a rematch.

“I think it warrants a rematch,” said Holm during the post-fight presser. “When you have more than half the people saying the fight should have gone the other way, usually that warrants a rematch. So that would be awesome. The fight could have gone either way,” she said. “I felt like I had three rounds, but I also had her rocked twice and didn’t capitalize on it, and that’s my own fault.”

The UFC 208 bout between Germaine de Randamie and Holly Holm ended with a unanimous decision in favor of de Randamie. All judges scored 48-47. However, some people, including Holm believe that de Randamie should be penalized for her illegal blows.

Germaine de Randamie apologizes to Holly Holm

At the end of the second and third round, de Randamie hit Holm with hard blows that came noticeably after the horn sounded. The incident could have a major effect on the outcome of the match if only the referee made the right decision. If de Randamie had been penalized for her illegal blows in the form of a point deduction, the fight would end up as a draw and no champion would have been crowned.

Unfortunately, the referee only issued a warning. The newly crowned UFC women’s featherweight champion defended herself and said that she didn’t do it on purpose. However, Holm isn’t buying what she said and claimed that it was intentional.

“It wasn’t meant for me to hit her after the bell,” de Randamie said on FS1’s UFC 208 post-fight show. “It was in the heat of the moment. I apologize. I’m not like that.”

Despite the controversy, Germaine de Randamie strongly believed that she really deserved to win the title.  For de Randamie, her willingness to engage with her opponent made the judges decide to make her the winner of the bout. However, Holm insisted that she won rounds three to five and she deserved to be given a rematch.

As of now, the UFC hasn’t released any information regarding de Randamie’s first title defense. Holm went 0-3 since she defeated Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, making her questionable for another title fight. Germaine de Randamie will be having a surgery on her hand which could delay her next fight.
