A Johnny Hendricks vs Kelvin Gastelum is looming in UFC 200.
According to an article that appeared in MMA Mania, with UFC 200 just three months away, the fight cards are slowly taking shape and a Hendricks vs Gastelum match is in the works for the event.
Both Hendricks and Gastelum are coming off losses in their most recent fights. The former was completely outclassed by Stephen Thompson in March losing by TKO. It marked the first time in Hendricks career that he was stopped by an opponent. The latter, on the other hand, has just come from a split decision loss to Neil Magny last November.
For Hendricks, it is a case of a “do-or-die” as he needs to get back on track. Prior to his loss to Thompson, his scheduled fight before that was cancelled due to major weight-cutting fail. The 24-year old Gastelum won the previous fight against Nate Marquardt via TKO in UFC 188.
Hendricks is currently ranked #5 in the welterweight division. He has dropped two of his last three fights and is just 2 – 3 in his last five fights. After a split decision loss to Robbie Lawler for the welterweight belt, he defeated Matt Brown before his loss to Thompson.
Gastelum scored victories in his first 10 career fights including five inside the Octagon. His win streak ended in 2005 when he loss to Tyron Woodley.
UFC 200 is set for July 9 at the T-Mobile Arena. To date, the fight card has not yet been finalized. Aside from the Hendricks vs Gastelum fight, the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are also expected to be on the card. Cain Velasquez vs Travis Browne and Gerard Mousasi vs Derek Brunson are also expected to be included on the card.
