Conor McGregor just recently lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in Las Vegas while Ronda Rousey lost her bantamweight title to Holly Holm at UFC 193 last year. But despite these losses, the star value and appeal of both McGregor and Rousey has not diminished.
So who is the biggest star of UFC then?
Chael Sonnen has the answer.
Sonnen believes that despite his UFC 196 loss, McGregor is the biggest star of UFC. However, he believes that although the Irishman’s loss to Diaz has cost him his invincibility, his star power has not diminished.
“Being invincible isn’t a tremendous drawing point, good competition is, somebody that’s exciting,” Sonnen told Submission Radio as reported Bloody Elbow.
“So he’s going to do fine, but to say that he’s not going to take a dip, yeah I think he’ll take a little bit of a dip. But even with a dip he’ll still be the biggest star the company’s got right now.”
He believes that McGregor has the power to draw a bigger crowd than Rousey.
“He’s always been, he’s always been. That’s never been true [that Ronda was a bigger star]. She’s a good friend, I don’t mean this negative, not even a tiny bit, but that’s never been true. I never understood why they have constantly said it. God bless them, it’s just simply not true. But Conor holds the gate records and he holds the pay-per-view records and she hasn’t touched him. And that’s the truth, regardless of what you might read in the media.”
Meanwhile, Ronda is enjoying a break from the Octagon and plans to return later this year. Her post-UFC 193 loss, she has won WWE Slammy Award, appeared in SNL and featured as one of the cover girl for SI’s swimsuit edition.
