UFC light champion Conor McGregor is yet to announce his return to Octagon but there are already speculations about his next opponent. An ESPN analyst believes that “The Notorious” will settle his score with Nate Diaz and make their trilogy bout happen.
The cancellation of the UFC 209 between lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson made people think what will happen next on the division. The winner of the bout was supposed to challenge Conor McGregor for the title unification. However, the idea was scrapped after Nurmagomedov was hospitalized while cutting weight.
Tony Ferguson expressed his disappointment with the incident but understood Nurmagomedov’s situation. “El Cucuy” claimed that he’s willing to schedule another interim title fight against “The Eagle” but wants an assurance. So far, Nurmagomedov’s camp hasn’t given any response regarding Ferguson’s demand.
Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz III
According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, the trilogy bout between McGregor and Nate Diaz could happen when “The Notorious” returns to the Octagon. Though Tony Ferguson will likely be McGregor’s next opponent, the UFC may consider a “money fight” over the “rightful No. 1 contender fight” once again.
“The UFC needs a blockbuster fight and it’s been proven this qualifies. Yes, McGregor sells fine on his own, against anyone — but Diaz raises that already high bar,” Okamoto said.
Ferguson and Nurmagomedov will surely disagree with the idea since they were already campaigning for a title fight even before Conor McGregor became the lightweight champion. However, the cancellation of their bout led to the possibility of McGregor-Diaz 3.
John Kavanagh prefers Nate Diaz as McGregor’s next opponent
Recently, the super fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. continues to make noise once again. McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh believed that fight is likely to happen. However, for him, he prefers to see “The Notorious” fighting in the Octagon against Nate Diaz.
“My number one thing would be for Conor to fight MMA,” Kavanagh said. “That’s my number one thing. That’s my selfish number one, what I would like to see. Which opponent? I’ve said it before – the Nate [Diaz] rematch interests me a lot because it’s 1-1 and how the styles match up.”
Most MMA fans will surely love to see the trilogy bout between McGregor and Diaz. “The Notorious” already stated after UFC 202 that their third fight should happen at lightweight. However, if Nurmagomedov and Ferguson scheduled an earlier bout, there is a possibility that the McGregor-Diaz 3 will happen after the title unification.
