UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor continues to campaign for a super fight against undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, UFC president Dana White said that the fight won’t happen and has revealed the next opponent of “The Notorious”.
“I don’t know where we’re at, we’re nowhere. We’re nowhere with it,” White told TMZ Sports about the status of the McGregor-Mayweather super fight. “I expect Conor’s next fight to be in the UFC, in mixed martial arts and the winner of Khabib (Nurmagomedov) vs. (Tony) Ferguson.”
Conor McGregor decided to take a “10-month off” after defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the lightweight belt. Since then, McGregor has been the main target of contenders from the featherweight and lightweight divisions, including Jose Aldo, Tony Ferguson, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Days after acquiring his second belt, McGregor relinquished the featherweight title. The UFC automatically declared then-interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo as the new champ. With McGregor’s return remains unknown, lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Gerguson agreed to fight at UFC 209 for the interim belt.
From the time of his return, Conor McGregor should face the winner of the Nurmagomedov-Ferguson bout for the title unification. If he fails, there is a higher possibility that the UFC will force him to relinquish another belt. However, McGregor doesn’t seem to be threatened by the idea of losing another belt.
Floyd Mayweather on fighting Conor McGregor: ‘Let’s make it happen’
UFC president Dana White has already expressed his strong disagreement with the super fight and insisted that McGregor is currently under contract with the UFC. Floyd Mayweather Jr. also revealed that there have been no official details yet regarding the fight. However, like McGregor, Mayweather also thinks that the bout should happen at all costs.
“I’m here to say today, on my birthday, they keep throwing the Conor McGregor name out there,” Mayweather told Showtime Boxing. “Conor McGregor, like I said before, I’m here let’s make it happen. Let’s make the fight happen. Let’s give the fans what they want to see. There’s only one fight out there that’s important and that’s Mayweather and Conor McGregor.”
Some people believed that the dream fight would be one-sided in favor of Mayweather. However, for legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach, Conor McGregor has the chance to beat the boxing champ. McGregor won most of his fights with his incredible striking force and Roach said that “one punch” can change everything.
Due to the disagreement from the UFC, the possibility of the Mayweather-McGregor super fight remains unclear. Also, if McGregor would want to stay as the UFC lightweight champ, he should fight the winner of the Ferguson-Nurmagomedov UFC 209 bout.
