UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo plans to fight in the lightweight division after Max Holloway turned down their supposed title unification bout at UFC 208.

Jose Aldo automatically became the new undisputed featherweight champion after the UFC announced that Conor McGregor relinquished the belt. Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis fought at UFC 206 for the interim featherweight belt. Before UFC 206, the promotion informed Aldo that he’ll be fighting the winner to unify the title.

Holloway won the bout and became the interim featherweight champion. Aldo and “Blessed” are set to face at UFC 208 ON Feb. 11. Unfortunately, Holloway turned down the fight due to several reasons. In an interview with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, Aldo expressed his frustration and doesn’t believe Holloway’s excuses.

“First, I heard he twisted his ankle and wouldn’t have time to heal. Then I heard he had a trip booked to Disney World with his kids and he wouldn’t be able to reschedule. Then I heard his gym is closed during the holidays and he wouldn’t have enough time to train. So he’s basically going around, talking a lot of trash, saying a lot of bullshit and acting like a punk. He just talking shit,” Aldo said.

Aldo revealed his plan of moving up to the lightweight division for the interim belt. However, he claimed that an “undisclosed opponent” turned down the UFC’s offer for the fight. If he’s aiming for the interim belt, Aldo must be talking about either Tony Ferguson or Khabib Nurmagomedov.

However, before Aldo named the fighter, UFC lightweight No. 1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov responded to Aldo’s statement. Nurmagomedov advised the UFC featherweight champion, “do not fall for the mind games of the UFC.”

Aldo says, referring to me, that I refused to fight with him. Tell him that I do not bully the little. I want a real battle, and only Tony can give it to me. At this stage of my career, even if I win Daniel Cormier, fans will say that I have to fight with Tony, and I agree with them. I have spent my career in the UFC asking for the strongest opponents, currently in this division we must decide who is stronger, me or Tony? Without exception, all the fans and experts want to see this fight and I want to give it to them. And you, Aldo, I advise you not to lose the respect of your fans, including me, do not lose your head, do not fall for the mind games of the UFC, and be yourself.

Nurmagomedov remains undefeated and already expressed his intention to fight for the title. However, McGregor decided to take a ’10-month off’ and won’t be fighting until August 2017. The Russian mixed martial artist called out Tony Ferguson for a match but the latter said that he will not be accepting fights from “peanuts.

As of now, the UFC is yet to release any information regarding Aldo’s statement. However, if McGregor will not be returning soon, there is a higher possibility that Aldo, Ferguson, or Nurmagomedov will be fighting for the UFC interim lightweight belt.
