UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson expressed his willingness to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov again despite the recent cancellation of their UFC 209 bout. However, “El Cucuy” will only accept another UFC interim lightweight title fight on two conditions.
According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Tony Ferguson sets his conditions if Khabib Nurmagomedov wants to schedule a fight with him again. If Nurmagomedov fails to make weight once again, Ferguson will be automatically declared as the interim lightweight champion and gets his receive his full contracted purse. If Nurmagomedov and the UFC agree with his demand, Ferguson vowed to sign the fight agreement.
It wasn’t the first time that the incident happened between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson. In December 2015, both fighters were expected to face at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov pulled out from the fight due to injury.
The UFC rescheduled the bout at UFC on Fox 19 but didn’t happen once again after Ferguson had lung issue. Everything was set at UFC 209 and most people expected the faceoff between the two lightweight contenders. Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov pulled out for the second time.
Tony Ferguson understood Nurmagomedov’s situation and wished him a quick recovery. In an Instagram post, the undefeated Russian mixed martial artist also offered an apology to “El Cucuy.” Ferguson remains interested in fighting Nurmagomedov but he wants an assurance before it happens.
“I feel I should get my [$250,000] show money,” Ferguson said. “It is what it is. It stinks. But I think I should get my show money, so we can move forward and let’s give the crowd what they want. This is a badass fight. I’m willing to go, but it has to be fair terms. If I choose to fight Khabib again, we have to have assurances.”
As Okamoto notes, if the UFC will reschedule the bout, it should take place at UFC 211. Nurmagomedov will observe the annual Muslim fasting period of Ramadan, which extends from May 26 to June 25 this year. The fight should occur before “The Eagle” takes that break.
UFC interim title fight between Tony Ferguson and Eddie Alvarez possible
Tony Ferguson is also willing to fight former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez as long as the interim is on the line. However, Ferguson isn’t sure if Alvarez would want to face him soon.
“The only other option for an interim title would be Eddie Alvarez, and it doesn’t sound like he wants to fight me anytime soon,” Ferguson said.
Recently, Alvarez revealed that Nate Diaz turned down an offer to fight him. In a recent interview, Alvarez expressed his intention to fight Ferguson if Nurmagomedov will need a longer rest.
