Tony Ferguson continues to campaign for a title fight against UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor since the cancellation of his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Recently, on Twitter, “El Cucuy” challenged “The Notorious” to defend his title, or vacate it.
At UFC 209, Tony Ferguson was expected to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the interim UFC lightweight title. The winner of the bout was supposed to face Conor McGregor, who’s currently on a hiatus to spend more time with his family. Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov pulled out from the bout after being hospitalized, leading to the cancellation of the bout.

Tony Ferguson says “Money” will destroy UFC Champ Conor McGregor
Ferguson voiced his frustration but tried to understand Nurmagomedov’s situation. Since then, he’s been calling out McGregor to fight him next. However, as of now, “The Notorious” planned to prioritize his superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour, Ferguson said there’s “no way” McGregor will win against the undefeated boxing champ. “El Cucuy” also urged the UFC to give him the chance to fight for the title.
“Well, why not? I mean, literally I was just fighting for the [interim] belt,” he told Ariel Helwani. “I feel like I am a legit contender, I’ve got nine wins in a row, I’ve got X amount of performance [of the night] victories. Really, I’ve been putting in some work. I feel like I deserve it.
“What am I going to do. I’m just going to boom boom, banging through these dudes, man. And just keep knocking them out and finishing them. I’ve had it in my head I need a knockout. So if you guys want to see somebody get knocked out, let’s go.”
“El Cucuy” should get interim belt to threaten “The Notorious”
As of now, Tony Ferguson should push the UFC to give him another opponent for the interim UFC lightweight championship. Acquiring the interim belt will force McGregor to defend his belt if he doesn’t want to lose it for the second time. Ferguson already expressed his intention to schedule a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov for the fourth time but on two conditions.
If Nurmagomedov fails to make weight once again, Ferguson will be automatically declared as the interim lightweight champion and gets his receive his full contracted purse. However, Nurmagomedov isn’t giving any response regarding his demand. Other possible opponents for Ferguson include Eddie Alvarez, Edson Barboza, and Nate Diaz.
