In the recently concluded UFC 203 in Ohio, the much anticipated MMA debut of former WWE superstar CM Punk ended in a losing effort by Punk to Mickey Gall. Punk suffered a defeat to Gall in the first round via submission due to a rear-naked choke.
In the fight, the 37-year old immediately found himself in big trouble as Gall quickly positioned himself into a side control before finally controlling Punk’s back. Gall dropped some big punches and then finished with a rear-naked choke.
According to The Sports Blaze, Punk has been training at Roufusport in preparation for the fight. The camp, led by kickboxing veteran Duke Roufus, is home to big UFC names such as UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and One FC Welterweight champion Ben Askren.
In a report posted by MMA Mania, after suffering his first MMA defeat, Punk remained composed and gracious inside the Octagon. Punk also insisted that he will be back for another shot to earn his first win.
“I just like to take challenges. This was a hell of a mountain to try to climb and I didn’t get to the summit today, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop,” Punk said. “I appreciate the support from everybody. Obviously, Mickey is a hell of a fighter.
“This is the most fun I’ve had in my life,” Punk added. “This was the second best day of my life, besides marrying my wife.”
In the main event, local hero Stipe Miocic gave the audience a brilliant performance after defeating top contender Alistair Overeem with a first round knockout to retain his UFC Heavyweight title.
