In the upcoming main event, this weekend with UFC 207 people expects a different Ronda Rousey entering the Octagon. But UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes does not fear a returning Rousey as she vows to score an upset.
Between the two fighters, Rousey gets most of the promotion even if she is the challenger this time around. People have forgotten that Nunes is the champion and showed finesse after disposing of Miesha Tate back at UFC 200. Simon Head of The Sun describes Nunes, as the well-rounded fighter compared to “Rowdy.”
Nunes have a mixture of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and deadly striking power, which could knock and hurt Rousey. She managed to develop her skills inside the Octagon in being a world-class champion. During their ceremonial weigh-in at UFC 205, Nunes made sure to send a message to Rousey – she is not intimidated.
Who is the underdog?
Basing from oddsshark, Rousey has the upper hand with a -140 considering the promotion that most focus on her return. But Nunes does not mind being the underdog going into their fight as she vows an upset. Nunes stressed she has no plans of handing her title back to Rousey.
Observers say Rousey will come out guns blazing, but need caution as Nunes also comes ready and roaring. Despite the difference between the two fighters, many see the bout ending quickly regardless of who gets the upper hand.
Dana White clearly picks Rousey
But if UFC president Dana White was to pick sides, he clearly goes with Rousey no matter what happens. White believes the “old” Rousey is back with pure determination ahead UFC 207. He praised Rousey’s contribution of women in the MMA and insisted her actions will decide her fate and not words.
“This is the way she [Rousey] wanted it. The only thing she cares about now is focusing on winning. She has done a lot of things for us. This is what she wanted and we gave it to her,” White said.
White admits having conversations with Rousey almost every day, saying she is well and ready to “roll.” He stresses Rousey is in good shape and “psychologically competitive.” White even aligned Rousey with other great fighters of all time such as Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.
“You go through the list of all the greatest fighters who have ever lived, everybody has a loss. It is always interesting and exciting to see if they can come back, like hers,” White added.
People like White will pick Rousey to win, not out pity, but they see her determination to come back. But reality, most of the time bites harder knowing that Nunes is no push over. Her determination is out of the question, knowing she is ready for this fight ever since joining the UFC.
