UFC President Dana White is rumored to be looking at the possibility of putting either Georges St-Pierre or welterweight champion Robbie Lawler to fight Nate Diaz for the main event of UFC 200 slated on July 9 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The thought of having two of the biggest names in the UFC organization will give Nate Diaz his dream come true of getting the fights that he deserves. After beating Conor McGregor at UFC 196, Diaz has demanded the UFC to give him the big fights. Now that the UFC has officially axe McGregor out of UFC 200, both St-Pierre and Lawler are the top choices that could bring in both tickets and pay-per-view sales sky-high.
Last Tuesday, White told media outlets that McGregor will not be fighting at UFC 200 because he refused to come to Las Vegas and promote his supposed rematch with Diaz. In return, McGregor slams White on social media stating that he is paid to fight and not to promote. He was asking for a “leeway” from the UFC to give him the focus he needs to reclaim his honor in his fight against Diaz.
McGregor even posted that he flew his entire team to Portugal and Iceland to look into the mistakes he made during their first meeting with Diaz. He added that the promotional tour has distracted his focus and he hoped that the UFC would reconsider.
“I am just trying to do my job and fight here. I get paid to fight. I am not yet paid to promote. I have become lost in the game of promotion and forgot about the art of fighting. There comes a time when you need to stop handing out flyers and get back to the damn shop. I flew an entire team to Portugal and to Iceland to make my adjustments in preparation and fix my errors I made with the weight and the cardio prep. With the right adjustments and the right focus, I will finish what I started in that last fight. I will not do this if I am back on the road handing out flyers again,” McGregor stated.
However, his pleas did not sit well with White as he was officially cut from UFC 200 and that White explains that they are talking with Diaz’s camp to come up with a list of potential opponents for the main event.
“I didn’t want Nate to get screwed up in this whole deal and not have the opportunity to fight on this card.”We talked to Nate. We threw out some opponents and we’ll see what happens,” White told TMZ Sports.
Aside from St-Pierre and Lawler, the UFC is also rumored to bill Diaz with lightweight fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, but the latter refuses to fight Diaz as the Muslim celebration of the Ramadan is also set to take place soon.
St-Pierre is talking about a comeback and a fight with Diaz will not be bad enough considering that he has trained ever since he went off the grid in 2013 while Lawler is still scheduled to fight someone in the future and billing him with Diaz could also be a fit for both fighters. Whatever the case, White and the UFC will be announcing soon, as Diaz and fight fans are awaiting the main card of the night.
