UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has no plans to stay idle for a long time as rumors are swirling that she may next face former champ Ronda Rousey or “The Ultimate Fighter” winner Julianna Pena at UFC 205.
The 28-year old Brazilian champ told MMAJunkie that after bringing pride and honor to her country, a fight with Rousey at the Madison Square Garden might motivate her to speed up her comeback inside the Octagon. Nunes stressed that if Rousey is one of the biggest fighters of all time, she has to prove it and take the fight slated for Nov. 12.
“This is the fight that makes sense. I’m taking my country and she’ll be in hers because I want it to be in New York City. It will be historic – the first card there. I want to keep making history, and this is the next step,” Nunes said.
The champ, however, has other names lined up if ever Rousey chickens out of her challenge. One name in particular stirs her curiosity and that is “The Ultimate Fighter 18” winner Julianna Pena. Nunes noted that she is intrigued with Pena’s fighting style, which makes her a worthy opponent.
It would be remembered that Pena called out the UFC that she deserves a title shot. For Nunes, it was a brave move and noted that bold fighters like Pena make it to the top of the chain, not those who try to avoid getting beaten black and blue.
“I’m going to study her and build another strategy. I’m a versatile fighter. I like to innovate with every fight. I’ll always be a dangerous fighter looking to finish both on the feet and on the ground,” Nunes added.
Nunes also clarified that she is not eluding Valentina Shevchenko, who has asked for a title shot. She explained that there is nothing to settle with Shevchenko as she clearly defeated her. Nunes noted that Shevchenko will have to wait for her turn as she is clearly not interested in fighting someone whom she already has beaten.
For now, Nunes is living her dream as a champion and wants to retire as a champion as well. Like other champions, she stressed that she will do everything to keep her belt under her. Nunes is much more motivated now that the title rests upon her, though one thing is clear for her she wants Rousey or Pena for UFC 205 in New York.
