The NBA’s Last Two Minute Report revealed that the Boston Celtics should have an extra second on the clock before the final play of Game 6 against the Washington Wizards. Isaiah Thomas, who took the final shot, believes he could have made a better play with the extra second.
“I could take another dribble. I could have got past [Markieff] Morris, probably. A little bit, got a little bit more separation,” Thomas said after Boston’s off-day practice on Sunday. “It is what it is. We can’t worry about that. It just sucks that they came out with it and said we should have had another second.”
Last Two Minute Report: Celtics should have extra second for final play
With 7.7 seconds remaining in Game 6, the Celtics led by two points and were in a strong position to close the series against the Wizards. Unfortunately, John Wall knocked down a three-pointer to give the Wizards a one-point lead. With 3.5 seconds left, Kelly Oubre Jr. fouled Kelly Olynyk, giving the Celtics only 1.7 seconds to make the final play.
Isaiah Thomas was designed to take the final shot but got double teamed upon receiving the ball. However, he still managed to release the ball but missed the off-balance three-pointer. On Saturday, the NBA revealed in a Last Two Minute Report that the Celtics should have 2.7 seconds left after Oubre fouled Olynyk.
Thomas could have gotten away from the double team and made a better execution. He admitted that he yelled at the officials to check the clock but didn’t receive any response to his pleas. In the Last Two Minute Report, the league noted that “Instant replay is not permitted in this situation.”
“Our understanding, from what we’ve learned, is that they can’t check that,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “Maybe I’m wrong there. That’s what I was told [Saturday]. Our bench was asking. I was more focused on what’s next because I didn’t think it was going to get overturned, necessarily. But maybe, as we look at in the future, maybe that is something that we can review. Those things happen. Move on. Get ready for [Monday] night.”
Isaiah Thomas, Celtics confident to beat Wizards in Game 7
The NBA’s Last Two Minute Report didn’t sit well with the Celtics but they have no choice but to focus on their upcoming game. The series will head back to Boston where the Celtics beat the Wizards thrice with a double-digit lead. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup between the Celtics and the Wizards will be on Monday night at TD Garden.
