The Philadelphia 76ers will have the first overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft after the luck lottery went their way. According to the latest rumors, the Sixers may be selecting Brandon Ingram of Duke University over Ben Simmons of Louisiana State University.

Philadelphia had the best chance of getting the first pick since they had the worst record in the 2015-16 regular season. The Los Angeles Lakers will be getting the second overall pick while the Boston Celtics have the third overall.

Ingram and Simmons are the projected top two picks of this year’s rookie class. Kevin O’Connor of SB Nation speculates that the Sixers will be picking the Duke product because he is the better fit for their team.

“Ingram is the type of player that can switch on defense, but opponents will likely have a hard time switching against him on offense. He can shoot over the top of small defenders or drive by slower ones. On defense, he’s currently underdeveloped, but his tremendous length (7’3 wingspan) gives him a chance to defend multiple positions. For the Sixers, it’s not an easy pick, but the right one,” O’Connor wrote.

The Sixers have selected three straight big men in the draft: Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor. Noel has proven that he is one of the best young defensive players in the league while Okafor showed that he can score against the best frontcourts in the league.

On the other hand, Embiid has not played in an NBA game due to two consecutive foot surgeries. Nonetheless, Philadelphia may be looking to unload one or two players this offseason in exchange for a star player.

As mentioned in a previous report, Croatian star forward Dario Saric is also coming to the Sixers next season. Drafting Ingram would make sense for them as they will have a scorer with a lot of potentials and someone who they can build around.

The last time Philadelphia had the first overall pick, they selected Allen Iverson in the 1996 NBA draft.
