Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Sacramento Kings who are reportedly having trade talks involving Rudy Gay and Iman Shumpert.
Rudy Gay has been linked in various trade rumors this offseason. The 30-year-old small forward expressed his frustration over the Kings’ management with the way they were handling the trade rumors surrounding him. Also, Gay was disappointed with the Kings’ selections in the recent NBA draft.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported that Rudy Gay informed the Sacramento Kings about his plan to exercise his player option next summer and become a free agent. This means that he is seriously considering to leave the Kings.
Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is still hoping that Rudy Gay will change his mind and stay in Sacramento. However, it seems like the 30-year-old small forward has already made up his mind. With this, it will be best for the Kings to consider trading him now than lose him next summer without getting anything in return.
Rudy Gay is a prolific scorer and could still be considered as an attractive trade asset. In the past months, there were rumors that the Sacramento Kings were interested in acquiring Iman Shumpert of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Should they trade Gay for Shumpert?
Iman Shumpert has been involved in DUI issue last month. There are speculations that the Cavaliers are considering to trade him not because of the case he is facing but because of his poor performance last season. Though the Cavs won their first championship title, Shumpert only averaged 5.8 points on 37 percent shooting.
“Several opposing team executives told Amico Hoops earlier this summer the Cavs had called to explore potential trade packages centered on Shumpert, a 6-foot-5 reserve.” Amico Hoops founder Sam Amico said.
The Kings could engage in a trade deal to acquire Iman Shumpert from the Cavaliers. With the Cavaliers goal to defend their title, adding a solid scorer like Rudy Gay will be a good move. Gay could be a backup for LeBron James.
The problem is the Cavaliers could not straight swap Iman Shumpert for Rudy Gay. They should add some more piece to make the deal successful. If this trade succeeds, it will help both teams in filling up the needs to improve on their roster.
