Only President Barack Obama can joke about the Michael Jordan Internet meme with Michael Jordan around and get away with it.

President Obama gave the Presidential Medal of Freedom award to 21 sportsmen, artists, scientists and philanthropists, which included the former Chicago Bulls superstar in the NBA and widely considered the greatest of all time in the sport.

Michael Jordan, more than just a meme – Barack Obama

“He’s more than just a logo, more than just an Internet meme,” President Obama burned the six-time NBA champion, who was laughing in his seat.

“There’s a reason you call somebody ‘the Michael Jordan of. The Michael Jordan of neurosurgery, or the Michael Jordan of rabbis, or the Michael Jordan of outrigger canoeing. They know what you’re talking about.”

Other sportsmen who were honored were Kareem-Abdul Jabar (Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks) and sportscaster Vin Scully (Major League Baseball).

Obama is a self-proclaimed sports and NBA fan, particularly of Jordan’s Bulls franchise. Obama added more quotable quotes and even referred to Jordan as “that guy from Space Jam.”

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation’s highest civilian honor – it’s a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better,” Obama said about the award via the official White House website.

“From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way.”
