Carmelo Anthony led the New York Knicks to a surprising win over the San Antonio Spurs, one of the best teams in the league. The Knicks beat the Spurs, 94-90 as Anthony’s team played well on both ends of the floor to stop temporarily the NBA trade rumors surrounding the team.

Anthony credited his team’s effort on Sunday. He said that the effort was there for the Knicks and they needed it against the Spurs team that is in second place in the Western Conference.

Carmelo Anthony loves Knicks’ effort

“They want us to compete. I understand that. Win, lose or draw they want us to go out there and compete on a nightly basis and if we’d have lost this game today, this would have been a game where I can say we competed and the effort was there and everything was there,” Anthony said about the Knicks’ performance via ESPN.

The Knicks held the Spurs to just 90 points in this game. San Antonio was held to 36.4% field goal shooting . For the season, the Spurs averages 107.0 points per game and 47.8% field goal shooting, which is second in the league.

Anthony led his team with 25 points, including clutch baskets to close out the game for the Knicks. Derrick Rose added 18 points while Kristaps Porzingis had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. Willy Hernangomez also played well as a starter with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals.

Spurs had no help for Kawhi Leonard

Except for Kawhi Leonard, who had 36 points on 13-of-27 field goals, all of the other Spurs’ starters struggled shooting versus New York. LaMarcus Aldridge had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds but missed 11-of-16 shots. Tony Parker was held scoreless and Danny Green shot just 2-of-13 from the field.

This was a great win for Carmelo Anthony and New York because the Spurs appeared to be in control early in the game. The Knicks did not give up and came back when they trailed by double-digits in the second quarter. The Spurs still had the halftime lead, 48-42 but New York got the advantage, 69-65 at the end of the third quarter.

The Spurs tied the game at 81-81 with 3:03 to go in the game. But Rose and Anthony made back-to-back baskets and gave the Knicks an 86-81 lead late in the fourth quarter.

San Antonio’s loss snapped a two-game winning streak and they will face the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic before the All-Star break. The Knicks snapped a four-game losing streak and will face the Oklahoma City Thunder next.

The Knicks took the upset win over the Spurs but there are still NBA trade rumors involving Anthony. And fans are excited to see if he will eventually waive his no trade clause before the deadline.
