Jeremy Lin playing again with the Houston Rockets? That could happen with reports that the Texas team has put Mike D’Antoni as the favorite for the head coaching job for next season.
D’Antoni was the coach of Lin in the short “Linsanity” explosion with the New York Knicks in the 2011-2012 NBA season and the mentor is known for his fast-paced offense. A reunion would have been possible for the 2014-2015 in Los Angeles, but the Lakers fired D’Antoni before that season when Lin joined L.A. that year.
D’Antoni is being linked to the Rockets franchise to handle superstar James Harden with the possible hire seen as a move to try to maximize the offense of the squad. Houston has reportedly talked to various head coaching prospects like Kenny Smith, J.B.Bickerstaff, Chris Finch, Sam Cassell, Stephen Silas, Rex Kalamian, Jeff Bzdelick, David Blatt and Jeff Hornacek but it looks like D’Antoni is the favorite so far in the list.
There are also reports that the Rockets are getting D’Antoni to force Dwight Howard to leave Houston. Howard has a chance to return to the Rockets if he picks up the player option in his contract but the big man has said he also wants a long-term deal this offseason.
With D’Antoni at the helm in Houston, it is to be expected that the Rockets will play lots of small line-ups like those of the Phoenix Suns’ featuring Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire. The Rockets core will include James Harden and the addition of Jeremy Lin could help D’Antoni in looking for that potent “smallball” team in Houston.
