Detroit Pistons at Washington Wizards Feb 27, 2013

John Wall scored 24 points and the Washington Wizards’ defense held down the Charlotte Hornets to net the team a 109-99 road victory on Monday night. This was just the sixth road victory for Washington this season but they have won five of their last six games to continue to gain ground on the leaders in the Eastern Conference.

Wall also had 7 assists but he had enough help in this one. Markieff Morris added 23 points and 8 rebounds while Bradley Beal had 18 points with four three-pointers to help the Wizards improve to 24-20 this season. Washington is now in fifth place in the East and just two games behind the Atlanta Hawks.

Otto Porter Jr. also came up big vs. the Hornets registering a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Kelly Oubre Jr. added 10 points and 2 blocks off the bench.

Wizards’ Defense Key vs. Hornets

But it was the Wizards’ defense that was the key in this game. They held Charlotte to 38.9% field goal shooting overall and just 25.0% from the three-point area.

Hornets star point guard Kemba Walker had 24 points but struggled at 7-of-24 field goals. Nicolas Batum scored only 4 points missing 7-of-9 shots. Marco Bellineli came off the bench to score 18 points for Charlotte.

The Hornets dropped to 23-22 for the season and now in seventh place in the East. They had a three-game winning streak snapped after wins over Portland, Toronto and Brooklyn. Charlotte get a tough match-up in their next game when they face the league-best Golden State Warriors featuring Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

Washington’s only loss this week came against the Detroit Pistons and it was a close game, 113-112. After struggling in the early part of the regular season, the Wizards are now playing like a playoff team. The Wizards are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
