Los Angeles Lakers star Jordan Clarkson is reportedly arriving in Manila on Friday along with his brother Julian and Nike Global Sport Marketing executive Adrian Stelly.
The purpose of the visit is Nike-related, but it wasn’t officially disclosed. The global sneaker giant is set to hold an event on Saturday featuring the Lakers guard, where they will be unveiling the new jersey of the Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA Olympic qualifiers. The tournament will kick off in Manila in July.
Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin and other players of the national team will also feature in Nike’s event, according to the Rappler. The team is scheduled to practice in Kerry Sports Gym in the Shangri-La Hotel after the event. The Lakers guard may also attend the practice session. During his brief stay, he will also attend FilOil game of the DLSU Green Archers and Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday.
Clarkson is ineligible to play for the Gilas as his name wasn’t included in the 24-men’s roster which will be cut down to final 12.
The Lakers guard twice visited the country last year for an NBA sponsored event. He also visited his mother Annette’s relatives in Angeles City, Pampanga. Clarkson also participated in drills with the Gilas team in 2015 ahead of the FIBA Asia championship during his second visit to the Philippines last year. He also traveled to Taiwan and watched few games of the national team in the William Jones Cup.
According to a report in Philippine Star, the NBA star is expected to stay in Manila until Monday. Clarkson is expected to become the most sought after restricted free agent after posting averages 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game for the Lakers in the past NBA season.
