Kevin Durant earned plenty of criticisms since he decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the 73-9 win Golden State Warriors last summer. Durant defended himself from people saying that the NBA became less competitive after he joined the Warriors.
“Like I’m the reason why [expletive] Orlando couldn’t make the playoffs for five, six years in a row?” Durant told USA Today Sports. “Am I the reason that Brooklyn gave all their picks to Boston? Like, am I the reason that they’re not that good? [Laughs.] I can’t play for every team, so the truth of the matter is I left one team. It’s one more team that you probably would’ve thought would’ve been a contender. One more team. I couldn’t have made the [entire] East better. I couldn’t have made everybody [else] in the West better.”
Kevin Durant, LeBron James deserve every bit of respect
As of now, Kevin Durant is considered as an NBA villain. Some people labeled him as a “coward” for taking the easiest path to his first NBA championship title. However, it’s not the first time an NBA superstar joined a title contender to chase a ring. Recalling in 2010, LeBron James left the Cavaliers to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.
Like Durant, James was also criticized for his move. However, as of now, he’s considered as one of the best players to ever play the game. James and Durant didn’t become NBA superstars in an instant. They continue to work hard to become better players which give them the authority to choose the team they want in free agency.
Kevin Durant says he’s now at peace
So far, Durant is getting used to the way how some people treat him. Instead of firing back, the former MVP decided to ignore and remains focus on his game.
“I think this move, and the criticism that comes with this move, has made me zero in on what’s the most important thing, and that’s just playing basketball, working out every day, getting better, enjoying every single day as a basketball player,” Durant told the newspaper. “It made me really appreciate that. It made me go back to that. When you listen to the nonsense, then you start to really let it take control of your thoughts, that’s [not good], you know what I’m saying? So I just got back to the game.”
In his first season with the Warriors, Durant managed to return to the NBA Finals where they will face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Game 1 of the NBA Finals 2017 will be on June 1 at the Oracle Arena.
