New York Knicks’ Phil Jackson is seriously finding a new home for Carmelo Anthony. They engaged in trade talks to multiple teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Unfortunately, none of those teams expressed “strong interest” in acquiring Anthony, creating the possibility that he will stay with the Knicks this season.
Carmelo Anthony has a no-trade clause in his contract but revealed that he’s willing to waive it if the Knicks wanted to rebuild. However, this only applies for selected teams like the Cavaliers and the Clippers. Recently, the Knicks reportedly offered Anthony to Cavaliers for Kevin Love.
Cavs, Celtics not interested with Carmelo Anthony
However, ESPN’s Ryen Russillo revealed that the Cavaliers have no interest to acquire Anthony. Aside from the Cavaliers, the Knicks also reached out to the Celtics and the Clippers about a potential deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski and Chris Mannix of The Vertical. Between the two, the Celtics would be an ideal trade partner since they have a plethora of trade assets the Knicks need to rebuild.
Anthony will undeniably strengthen the Celtics chance of contending for the title this season. General manager Danny Ainge continues to hunt for superstars since the recent offseason. Unfortunately, ESPN reported the Celtics let the Knicks know they have no interest in Anthony.
Carmelo Anthony to Clippers?
This leaves the Los Angeles Clippers as the most likely trade destination for Carmelo Anthony. However, the Clippers couldn’t use Blake Griffin as a trade chip since the Knicks have Derrick Rose. Sending Griffin to New York would violate a rule in the collective bargaining agreement.
Frank Isola of New York Daily News revealed that the Knicks are open to trading Anthony to the Clippers even if they don’t get one of their “Big Three”. The Clippers could explore a trade package centered on Jamal Crawford, Austin Rivers, J.J. Redick and Luc Mbah a Moute. However, as Isola notes, no deal is imminent for now and the Knicks are expected to seek for a better offer before Feb. 23.
Carmelo Anthony will likely stay in New York
Despite the rumors, there is still a possibility that Anthony remains as a Knick until the end of the 2016-17 NBA season. Al Harrington, a close friend and former teammate of Anthony, believes that the nine-time NBA All-Star really wants to stay with the Knicks.
“The fact he loves New York so much, I think he probably stays for the rest of his contract,’’ Harrington said. “I know he doesn’t want to leave.’’
Anthony already informed Phil Jackson that he wants to stay and win with the Knicks. However, if they fail to enter the playoffs, Jackson will likely proceed with his plan to rebuild the team. Anthony’s future depends on the team’s performance this season. But, it remains a possibility that he’ll stay in New York until next summer.
