Kristaps Porzingis decided to skip the exit meeting with the New York Knicks and expressed his frustration over the team’s dysfunction and recent drama. Will the Latvian big man request a trade this summer?
Porzingis’ first two seasons in the NBA didn’t go well as the Knicks missed the playoffs for four straight seasons. The Knicks face various controversies during the 2016-17 NBA season, including the ongoing dispute between team president Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony. In an exit meeting, Porzingis decided not to show up as a sign of rebellion against the organization.
Kristaps Porzingis scared to be the next victim of Phil Jackson
Carmelo Anthony serves as the Knicks’ franchise player since his arrival in 2010. At 32, the 10-time NBA All-Star continues to show impressive stats, averaging 22.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists this season. In 2014, Knicks president Phil Jackson signed Anthony to a five-year contract with a no-trade clause.
The move simply showed how Jackson trust Anthony. Unfortunately, everything didn’t go as planned as the Knicks continue to struggle. Recently, Jackson voiced out his opinion, forcing Anthony to waive his no-trade clause this summer.
“We’ve not been able to win with him on the court at this time and the direction of our team is that he is a player that would be better somewhere else, and using his talents somewhere else where he can win and chase that championship. Right now, we need players that are really active, can play defensively and offensively. I told him this is not a situation where we’re going to dump you or anything like that. But we’re looking to improve ourselves however we can,” Jackson said.
Jackson’s treatment on Anthony may scare Kristaps Porzingis since he’s believed to be the Knicks’ next franchise player. The Knicks’ decision to pick the remaining two years of Jackson’s contract means Porzingis will spend more time working with the Zen Master. With the current situation, it will not be a surprise if Porzingis also choose to find his way out of the Knicks in the upcoming offseason.
Kristaps Porzingis not yet ready to a franchise player
In the nearing Carmelo Anthony trade, most people believe Porzingis will be the next Knicks’ main guy. However, Jackson doesn’t think Porzingis is ready to carry the load for the Knicks.
“No, I don’t [think he’s ready]. He’s 21 years old. That’s a big load for anybody to take on,” Jackson said. “But he’s shown that he’s competitive. He’s shown that he’s competitive. He’s shown that he’s got a sense of desire to win, etc. So we’re really pleased with how he’s developed. I think he had some concern this year about physicality, not being able to stand up to all the games physically with his Achilles tendon, back, etc.”
