Byron Scott coached the Lakers for two seasons where he established the worst record, 38-126, of any of the 16 coaches who had led the franchise for at least two seasons. In his second season, the Lakers finished a franchise-worst 17–65, resulting for the team to fire him and find a new head coach. Scott never had a good relationship with his players, especially D’Angelo Russell.
Byron Scott believes Lakers will target superstar this summer
In an interview with the Lakers Nation, Byron Scott talked about the front office shakeup that recently happened with the Lakers. Scott believes Lakers owner Jeanie Buss made the right decision to hire Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka. He thinks the two new front office executives will target big names in the upcoming offseason.
“I think they’re obviously looking to see if they can get a big-time free agent and it is probably going to be via trade or something like that. I think that’s what is on their minds, trying to make those changes right now. So I definitely think the Lakers are going to make a splash this summer,” Scott said.
Johnson and Pelinka are eyeing to make the purple and gold an attractive free agency destination once again. They also revealed their plan to “bring in” a superstar in Los Angeles this summer. The Lakers really need to add at least one superstar if they want to end their playoff drought next season.
Byron Scott clarifies opinion about Paul George trade
Scott believes the Lakers should sacrifice some of their young players if the Pacers officially make Paul George available on the trade market. The three-time NBA champion explained his opinion and stood firm that the Lakers should trade for the Pacers star.
“Magic has said Paul George’s name on a few occasions, so I’m just going by what I hear. I think Paul George has pretty much said he would love to play in L.A., so I’m just putting two and two together and I think it would be great for the city. I think it would be great for Paul George who grew up idolizing and rooting for the Lakers to be able to go back and play for a team that he loves. It would be a big splash for Earvin,” Scott said.
Acquiring a superstar like Paul George is something that the Lakers should prioritize in the upcoming offseason. However, they should be careful in throwing away trade assets as George could only be a one-year rental. George will likely stay in a team who has more chance of contending for the title.
