Markelle Fultz remains confident that he will be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft after having a workout with the Boston Celtics. Fultz has strong belief that he and Isaiah Thomas would be an incredible backcourt tandem next season.
“I think me and him would be a great fit,” Fultz said. “Just playing on and off the ball. He can go to 2, maybe I can go to 2. Being Huskies, we already got a connection. Being able to play together, we’re going to motivate each other, we’re going to help each other out. I think it would be something special. I think it would be good if I come here. The fans here are great. I think that energy is just going to carry over to how I play on the court and just give me a little boost of energy.”
Most mock drafts predict the Celtics selecting Markelle Fultz at No. 1. However, some people believe Fultz would be an odd fit in Boston since they already have Isaiah Thomas as their starting point guard. However, the former Washington Huskies star thinks they can coexist and opens the possibility of playing at 2 next season.
Markelle Fultz already feels he belongs in Boston
Aside from the workout, Fultz also visited the TD Garden where he saw the championship banners and pictures of Celtics legends. The 19-year-old guard already envisioned himself being one the Celtics greats and felt that he belongs. When asked about getting an assurance from the Celtics, Fultz immediately gave a negative response.
“No, no, no, they didn’t say that. They didn’t put that out there. I gotta earn everything,” Fultz said. “Just talking to them, we didn’t really talk about me getting drafted or anything like that, but more about me being a better young man, no matter where I go. Just what’s going to make me the best player I can possibly be.”
Will the Celtics trade the No. 1 pick?
As of now, Fultz is the top favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick, especially after Lonzo Ball refused to have a workout with the Celtics. However, it remains a possibility that the Celtics will trade the top selection if they receive an enticing offer. With the No. 1 pick and other trade assets, the Celtics are in a strong position to acquire a superstar this summer. Names of Jimmy Butler, Paul George, and Anthony Davis emerged as the Celtics’ potential trade targets.
