The Minnesota Timberwolves have the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft on Thursday and there are NBA draft rumors that says they are set to select Jamal Murray from Kentucky.
Murray’s college coach John Calipari says that his former player wants to play for the Timberwolves and play with young stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, the core players for the young Minnesota team.
“Who is Mr. Towns. That KAT kid? OK, well, here’s what I would say. [Wolves president of basketball operations and coach Tom Thibodeau] and I are great friends. He helped my career, helped me basketball-wise and every other way. I’m a big fan of Thibs. Jamal? I’m saying this to you and no one else. He loves Minnesota. As a matter of fact, that’s where he’d like to go,” Calipari said to the Star Tribune.
The 2016 NBA Draft is set for June 23 and Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram are set to be selected No. 1 and No. 2 by the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively. NBA draft rumors has both available in possible draft day deals but it looks like they are sticking with their plans of drafting the top two stars unless they get a superstar in return in any trade.
Different mock drafts have Murray, Kris Dunn, Jaylen Brown, Dragan Bender and Domantas Sabonis, among others ranked from No. 3 to No. 7 so there’s a big chance that the Timberwolves can select the Kentucky freshman.
The Boston Celtics, at No. 3, are the most active team trying to trade their pick. NBA draft rumors has also mentioned the Phoenix Suns, at No. 4 and the Timberwolves. However, if Minnesota gets a guy they like in Murray, it looks like they’d hold on to the pick.
