Dwyane Wade is yet to decide whether he will opt in of the second year of his contract with the Chicago Bulls or test the free agency market once again this summer. However, there is a growing optimism in Chicago that the veteran guard will return after the exit meeting with the Bulls management.
Last summer, Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade joined the Bulls to form the “Three Alphas” with Jimmy Butler. Even before the 2016-17 NBA seasons started, some people don’t see the three superstars building good chemistry in Chicago. All of them were ball-dominant players but not good floor spacers.
As predicted, the Bulls struggled in the first half of the season. However, they managed to bounce back and earned a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They faced the Boston Celtics in the first round and won the first two games at TD Garden. Unfortunately, after losing Rondo, the Bulls lost fourth straight games and suffered an early exit in the playoffs.
Should Dwyane Wade return to the Chicago Bulls?
Dwyane Wade can opt of out of the second year of his contract with the Bulls. He has until June 27 to officially decide on his $23.8 million player option. Wade admitted that Jimmy Butler is the major reason why he joined the Bulls.
“Jimmy is, you know, a huge component in me being here. You know, what’s his future like? But at the end of the day it is a me decision,” Wade said. “Everyone knows that Jimmy’s my guy, and I’m here because of our conversation (last summer). But a lot of it depends on the whole big picture. Jimmy’s a big piece, but it’s a big picture as an organization.”
Butler has been frequently mentioned in various trade rumors in the past months and expected to heat up once again this offseason. However, after his exit meeting, it seems like the Bulls gave him an assurance that he’ll stay in Chicago. On Saturday, Wade also met with the Bulls.
According to K.C. Johnson of Chicago Tribune, Wade’s season-ending player exit meeting with the Bulls was described as “positive” and “came on the heels” of a similar meeting with Butler. Wade is yet to make an official announcement but the Bulls look confident that he’ll return to Chicago for another season.
Dwyane Wade to Cleveland Cavaliers
On Saturday, Dwyane Wade was in Cleveland to watch the Cavaliers vs Warriors Game 4. While entering the arena, a Cavs fan yelled at Wade and asked him to join the Cavaliers next season. He has been frequently linked to the Cavaliers since the last offseason mainly because of his strong bond with LeBron James.
The NBA Finals 2017 proved that the Warriors are too much to handle for the Cavaliers. If they fail to defend their throne, the Cavaliers may consider recruiting more reinforcements in which Wade could be an option.
