Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the Toronto Raptors backup center Bismack Biyombo who is reportedly leaving his current team if the Los Angeles Lakers will offer him a maximum contract and a starting role.
The Toronto Raptors’ achievements in the recent season were undeniably incredible. They managed to enter the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history. The Raptors defeated the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat in the first two rounds of the Eastern Conference playoffs. However, they fell short when they got beaten by the Cleveland Cavaliers in their best-of-seven series.
Many are expecting that these will be the start of the Raptors’ legacy to become one of the dominant teams in the NBA. However, their plan is threatened to be ruined as the NBA free agency draws near.
DeMar DeRozan is expected to be the Raptors’ main priority this summer. DeRozan deserves a maximum contract after his outstanding performance in the recent season. On the other hand, the Raptors are also planning to re-sign Bismack Biyombo. According to Doug Smith of the Toronto Star, the Raptors could only offer Biyombo a mid-level exception of about $5.6 million stretched out over four years for somewhere near $25 million.
This could be not the salary that the Raptors backup center is expecting when he decided to opt out his contract. Smith doesn’t think that Bismack Biyombo will stay with the Raptors. He also emphasized that the starting role will be a big factor in his decision in free agency.
Despite his injury in the postseason, Jonas Valanciunas is still the starting center for the Toronto Raptors. Smith stated that the Raptors are totally prepared to let Biyombo leave this offseason.
The Los Angeles Lakers could be the perfect destination for Bismack Biyombo. The Lakers are currently in need of a starting center to replace Roy Hibbert, who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
The Lakers have enough salary cap to give him a max contract and could still sign another superstar free agent available in the market. Bismack Biyombo has proven that he was not only good as a backup center but can also be a starting caliber. His dominance under the basket and good defensive ability can give a big boost to the Lakers’ young roster.
