Phoenix Suns forward Jared Dudley is one of the people who believes Blake Griffin will re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers in the upcoming free agency. However, if Griffin decides to leave, Dudley sees his former teammates joining the Miami Heat.
“Miami,” Dudley said on an ESPN podcast (h/t South Florida Sun-Sentinel), “is the only case scenario to be able to do if you say, ‘Hey, you know what, I want to be the man of the team.’ What are his options? He could go to Miami and you can be the man and you’ve got [no] state tax. But that five-year max contract, you’re going to lose about roughly $30 million. Right?”
A month before free agency hits, the Clippers already revealed their plan to give Chris Paul and Blake Griffin max contracts. The Clippers are the only team who can offer Griffin a five-year deal worth $175 million. Other NBA teams can give him a four-year deal worth $130 million.
NBA Rumors: Blake Griffin to Miami Heat
Blake Griffin is a legitimate free agent target for the Miami Heat this offseason. Since losing all their “Big Three,” the Heat wants to acquire at least one superstar who can play alongside Hassan Whiteside and Goran Dragic. Griffin will be an ideal fit for the role and he can definitely help the Heat return to title contention.
“My whole thing is of where you want to live at?” said Dudley, who spent 2013-14 as Griffin’s Clippers teammate. “He lives in L.A., which he loves, Miami is a good place. So Miami is understandable: Pat Riley, they would make the playoffs with him, so that’s the only one I could somewhat see. You’re not going to Dallas if you’re Blake Griffin. You’re not going to Houston. New York Knicks? You’re not going there.”
Griffin is the main reason why the Clippers remain competitive in the past seasons. Unfortunately, they were still unable to grab their first Larry O’Brien Trophy. Griffin could be eyeing to start a new journey somewhere else where the Heat proves to be an ideal destination.
Blake Griffin leaves if Chris Paul signs with another team
Since suffering an early exit in the NBA Playoffs 2017, some people believe that the Clippers should consider breaking their “Big Three.” However, the Clippers still decide to keep their core intact by re-signing both Blake Griffin and Chris Paul in free agency. So far, the Clippers emerged as the “overwhelming favorite” to re-sign CP3 while the San Antonio Spurs hope they could lure the veteran point guard.
If Paul decides to stay, Griffin is also expected to re-sign. However, if Paul joins another team, this will give the Heat the opportunity to steal Griffin from the Clippers and start building their next “Big Three.”
