The Orlando Magic have made a couple of big moves this offseason including trading for Serge Ibaka and signing Bismack Biyombo to a max contract. However, those moves have created a glut of big men in Orlando which led to NBA rumors suggesting that the Portland Trail Blazers may acquire Nikola Vucevic from the Magic.
According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic plans on using Ibaka, Biyombo, and Vucevic in a three-man rotation. Even though it could work, these players will crave for more playing time as the season progress which would lead to chemistry issues.
Maxwell Ogden of Hoops Habit believes that Vucevic is the odd man out of the three with Aaron Gordon potentially sliding to the small forward spot. He pointed out that the Blazers are one of the potential suitors for the 25-year-old Montenegrin center.
The Blazers had a very good 2015-16 season but they are having a subpar summer as they missed out on players such as Hassan Whiteside, Dwight Howard, and Chandler Parsons while signing Evan Turner to a four-year, $70 million deal. They are also in danger of losing Allen Crabbe, who reportedly signed an offer sheet with the Brooklyn Nets.
Dave Deckard of Blazer’s Edge suggested that Portland could trade Mason Plumlee and Al-Farouq Aminu for Vucevic. Plumlee would be a viable backup in Orlando while Aminu fills a need in the wings.
As for the Blazers, they will have a third scoring option after Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. They could also free up some cap space if they acquired Vucevic which could help in retaining Crabbe as the team’s sixth man, per Rip City Project.
