The Portland Trail Blazers are near to complete their roster for the 2016-17 NBA season. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Trail Blazers will trade for Brook Lopez of Brooklyn Nets if their frontcourt will not improve next season.
The Portland Trail Blazers are one of the NBA teams who dreamt of becoming a title contender next season. Despite losing some of their key players last year, the Trail Blazers still managed to finish the fifth seed in the Western Conference and entered the second round of the playoffs.
The 2015-16 NBA season showed how dangerous was the Damian Lillard-C.J. McCollum backcourt. They tried to improve their frontcourt this summer by adding Festus Ezeli, Evan Turner, and Jake Layman. In an interview with Basketball Insider, McCollum praised the Trail Blazers’ offseason moves.
“I think the organization is heading in the right direction. We have a good roster and a good group of guys. We are continuing to build for now and the future. Now, the work begins to continue that process [and growth]. I’m excited to be a part of this team.” McCollum said.
Despite the improvements, there are speculations that the Trail Blazers are still eyeing to improve their frontcourt, especially the center position. The Trail Blazers tried to upgrade their center this free agency by targeting Hassan Whiteside and Dwight Howard.
Unfortunately, both big men signed with other NBA teams. There were rumors that the Blazers were not satisfied with Mason Plumlee’s performance. Though they acquired center Festus Ezeli, his performance in Golden State proved that he was not a starting caliber.
According to Michael Pina of RealGM, the Brooklyn Nets are eyeing to trade center Brook Lopez to speed up their rebuilding process. With no lottery picks until 2019, the only way they can better themselves is via trade and free agency.
Blazer’s Edge revealed that the Portland Trail Blazers are targeting Greg Monroe from the Milwaukee Bucks. However, his poor performance last season made them think twice before doing the move. In another trade scenario, the Trail Blazers could trade for Brook Lopez.
Lopez is a strong post scorer that the Blazers do not have. Last season, he averaged 20.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. If the Blazers succeed to acquire him, they will undeniably be a threat to the Western Conference champions, Golden State Warriors.
However, the success of the deal will depend on whom they are going to send to Brooklyn. They could trade combinations of Mason Plumlee, Al-Farouq Aminu, and future draft picks to the Nets.
