After being eliminated in the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Toronto Raptors will now focus on upgrading their roster in the upcoming offseason. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Raptors are eyeing to trade for New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony for three players and a draft pick.
Despite having the explosive backcourt duo of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors still have no answer for LeBron James’ dominance in the Eastern Conference. The Cleveland Cavaliers proved to be a huge problem for any East playoff teams who dream of entering the NBA Finals. Though there are speculations that the Raptors will undergo a full-scale rebuild, some people believe that they are only a superstar away from being a legitimate title contender.
Carmelo Anthony to Toronto Raptors
According to Bobby Marks of The Vertical, trading Carmelo Anthony will be the New York Knicks’ top priority this summer. In the past months, Knicks president Phil Jackson revealed his plan to get rid of Anthony. The 32-year-old small forward also expressed to waive his no-trade clause for the right situation.
Anthony didn’t include the Raptors in the list of teams he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause. However, joining the Raptors will undeniably give him a higher chance of winning his first NBA championship title. If Anthony agrees to be traded to Toronto, Tommy Beer of Basketball Insider created a scenario that will convince the Knicks to make a deal.
In the suggested trade scenario, the Raptors will send DeMarre Carroll, Cory Joseph, Pascal Siakam and Toronto’s 2018 first-round pick to Knicks for Carmelo Anthony. This trade works on the ESPN Trade Machine. If this trade proceeds, it will definitely help both teams in filling up the needs to improve on their roster.
Re-sign Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka
If the Raptors plan to trade for Anthony, they should prioritize re-signing Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka first. The starting five of Lowry, DeRozan, Anthony, Ibaka, and Jonas Valanciunas will undeniably give the Cavaliers a tougher competition next season. This will also give the Raptors a higher chance of winning their first NBA championship title.
“Toronto will almost certainly make every effort to re-sign Kyle Lowry and keep Serge Ibaka in Toronto by inking him to a new deal. Obviously, they are in “win now” mode. Much like the aforementioned Celtics, the Raps might believe they are just a key player away from dethroning the Cavs,” Beer wrote.
