Paul Millsap is reportedly undecided on his free agency plans after the 2016-2017 NBA Season. The indefinite status will place him in the middle of NBA rumors since the Atlanta Hawks want to think about their future first especially if they struggle to become title contenders this new season.

Millsap can potentially become a free agent after the season if he decides to opt out of his player option in his Hawks’ contract. With other players getting huge deals this offseason, it’s likely that the power forward also decide to demand a new contract and let go of his $21 million contracts for the 2017-2018 NBA Season.

If Millsap opts out he can sign another long-term deal with a higher salary per year. At 31 years old, injuries can happen and it’s wise for the player to get a huge long-term deal over a short-term contract.

“I haven’t decided anything, no,” Millsap said to “I think the plan is to see how this season goes and go from there. I can’t predict what is going to happen. For me, it focuses on basketball. Get through this year, try to get a championship for this team first of all. We’ll deal with all that during the summer time when we have all our options on the table.”

But the Hawks are not winning an NBA championship this year with other teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics all pegged as the better teams and conference contenders.

The Hawks are on the same level as the Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and others, who will all contend for the lower playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Barring any major trade, a line-up of Millsap, Howard, Kyle Korver, Kent Bazemore and Dennis Schroder won’t get far in the postseason.

One team that can be a good landing spot for Millsap are the Boston Celtics, a team that can pair him in the frontcourt with former Hawks center Al Horford. The Celtics can also offer the Hawks some young guys and future first round picks.

If the Hawks want to rebuild soon, they can trade Millsap and restart with young prospects. If Atlanta moves on from Millsap, it’s also likely that they trade veteran center Dwight Howard. More NBA rumors are expected to surround the Hawks should they struggle in the new NBA season.
