One of the most interesting storylines heading into training camp for the Boston Celtics is who will make it on the final roster. According to the latest NBA rumors, the final roster spot will come down to James Young and R.J. Hunter.
The Celtics currently has 21 players listed on their roster but two players, Ante Zizic and Guerschon Yabusele, will be playing overseas next season. Now, there are 19 players vying for 15 roster spots which mean four hopefuls will get cut.
ESPN experts predicted that the final roster spot will come down to two players: 2014 17th overall pick James Young or 2015 28th overall pick R.J. Hunter. They pointed out that Young has failed to develop in his first two seasons and it might be time to let him go.
On the other hand, Hunter has a better shot since he can shoot the ball. The Celtics main need is three-point shooting and Hunter certainly can provide them that.
Out of the 19 players heading into training camp, Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, Amir Johnson, Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Jonas Jerebko, Kelly Olynyk, Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier and Tyler Zeller are assured of roster spots.
It means that Young, Hunter, Ben Bentil, Abdel Nader, Gerald Green, Demetrious Jackson, John Holland and Jordan Mickey will fight it out for the four roster spots. The Celtics will likely keep Green, Mickey and Jackson while Hunter and Young battle for the 15th roster spot.
According to Tom Westerholm of MassLive, Hunter will get the final roster spot if he can have a great training camp shooting the ball. But if not, look for other players such as Bentil, Nader or Young to take up that 15th spot.
Nevertheless, there are still some NBA rumors pointing to the Celtics making a trade before training camp begins. However, those are just NBA rumors at the moment and it will stay the same unless Danny Ainge finds a trade he likes.
