Nerlens Noel of the Philadelphia 76ers has been linked with a trade to the Boston Celtics for quite some time now. The latest NBA rumors suggest that a one-on-one deal of Noel for Marcus Smart might work. However, is that really the best trade to do for both teams?
According to Michael Saenz of FanSided, this trade is the one that makes the most sense for both teams. The Celtics will get an athletic rim protector to shift Al Horford to his natural position while the Sixers finally have their point guard of the future.
Boston already has Isaiah Thomas at the point and it looks like he will be the team’s primary playmaker going forward. Even though Smart has the potential to be a really great player, he would not develop properly if he’s not regularly starting.
The Celtics can always deal Avery Bradley but he is far too important as a perimeter defender since Smart has not turned into one just yet. The team will look alright if they do not make the trade because they still have the two first round picks from the Nets, as well as third overall pick Jaylen Brown as trade baits.
On the other hand, the Sixers are in need of a point guard and getting Smart for Nerlens Noel would be a great deal. Philadelphia can always wait until the deadline to make a trade with other point guards such as Ricky Rubio being available.
The Celtics are very reluctant to break up their core but Danny Ainge is surely brewing a big trade and waiting for the right time to pull it. Adding Nerlens Noel will not make them title contenders and I think they can acquire him without sacrificing Marcus Smart.
They have Terry Rozier, who has a potential to be a really good starter, and adding the Nets’ 2018 first-round pick would do it. Nevertheless, these are just rumors and purely speculative at this point. What do you think? How can the Celtics acquire Nerlens Noel with trading Marcus Smart?
