The Boston Celtics will have the opportunity to add another talented point guard on their roster after acquiring the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. The potential arrival of Markelle Fultz will push the Celtics to make a tough decision regarding the future of Isaiah Thomas on their team.

Markelle Fultz and Isaiah Thomas play the same position, creating the belief that they can’t coexist in the Celtics’ backcourt. Some people believe the Celtics should consider trading the No. 1 overall pick to add another superstar to their team. However, Boston may also choose to trade Thomas and build around Fultz.

NBA Rumors: Isaiah Thomas trade almost happened last summer

Thomas is currently playing the best season of his career, averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists on 46.3 percent shooting from the field. He helped the Celtics return to the Eastern Conference Finals before suffering an injury in Game 2. As of now, there is no doubt that he’s the face of the Celtics’ franchise.

Last offseason, general manager Danny Ainge revealed his plan to bring in superstars to Boston. They succeeded to acquire Al Horford in free agency but failed to get their main target, Kevin Durant. They also acquired three young talents in the 2016 NBA draft, including backup small forward Jaylen Brown.

Jackie MacMullan of ESPN revealed that the Celtics made all of their players available on the trade market to acquire another lottery pick. As MacMullan notes, Ainge was also willing to trade Thomas for the right offer.

“Before the draft last year, Danny was trying to get two picks, not just Jaylen Brown,” MacMullan told Ryan. “He was on the phone with everybody from coast to coast, and he was offering everybody. That includes Marcus Smart and Isaiah Thomas, and anything else they needed to get where he wanted to go. There were no untouchables on that team last year.”

NBA Rumors: Keep Isaiah Thomas or draft Markelle Fultz

With the recent revelation, it will not be a surprise if the Celtics make Isaiah Thomas available again on the trade market. NBA trade rumors will surely heat up once the Celtics decide what to do with the No.1 overall pick. If they draft Markelle Fultz, there is a chance that Thomas will be playing for another team next season.

However, the Celtics are also open for the possibility of letting Thomas and Fultz play together next season. Thomas revealed that he reached out Fultz but didn’t divulge any information regarding their conversation.
