The Boston Celtics are expected to select former Washington Huskies guard Markelle Fultz as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 NBA draft. However, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge revealed that “a handful of teams” are eyeing to trade for the No. 1 pick. Should the Celtics trade the top selection for a superstar?

The Celtics continue to rise to the top since they decided to undergo a full-scale rebuild in 2013. Though they fell short in the Eastern Conference Finals, Boston will have the chance to add another talented player in the upcoming draft. Most mock drafts predict Markelle Fultz playing for the Celtics next season.

Should the Boston Celtics trade the No. 1 pick?

However, according to Adam Himmelsbach of Boston Globe, Ainge and the Celtics aren’t yet locked on Fultz. Recently, the Celtics reached out Lonzo Ball to have a workout with them but the former UCLA Bruins guard politely refused. Multiple NBA teams have also expressed interest in trading for the No. 1 pick.

“Ainge said he has yet to identify the prospect he would select. And, most importantly, he is prepared to sift through all options that come from being in such a prized position. He said “a handful of teams” has already expressed interest in acquiring the No. 1 choice from the Celtics, and those suitors are probably just getting started,” Himmelsbach said.

The Celtics are open for any possibility as they aim to build a championship team this offseason. Some people believe Fultz will be an odd fit in Boston since they already have Isaiah Thomas at the point. However, the Celtics will not let go the top pick for cheap assets.

Knowing Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, he will only trade the No. 1 pick if they will get a superstar in return. Names of Jimmy Butler of the Chicago Bulls and Paul George of the Indiana Pacers emerged as their potential trade targets. However, it remains a possibility that the Celtics will keep the No. 1 pick and look for a superstar on the free agency market.

Markelle Fultz desperately wants to be the No. 1 pick

Fultz revealed that he already had multiple conversations with Celtics general manager Danny Ainge. The Washington product remains hopeful that the Celtics will select him as the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

“I’ve talked to Danny a few times, and they want to get me to come out there for a visit,” Fultz told ESPN. “They just want to get a chance to know me better as a person. I want to be the No. 1 pick really bad. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, and I feel like I would fit well in Boston.”
