The Dallas Mavericks made the 2016 NBA Playoffs but were mostly unimpressive because of the quality of their roster falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in just five games in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. NBA rumors now surround the Mavericks, who have been major players in free agency the previous seasons.
The Mavericks are now reportedly trying to be aggressive this offseason in the latest NBA rumors, that have linked the team to top free agents like Dwight Howard (Houston Rockets), Hassan Whiteside (Miami Heat) and Pau Gasol (Chicago Bulls).
Also mentioned are Mike Conley from the Memphis Grizzlies and Nicolas Batum from the Charlotte Hornets although it’s seen that the Mavericks will prioritize signing a big man because they lack depth in their forward and center rotations.
This is not the first time that the Dallas Mavericks have been linked in NBA rumors with Dwight Howard. In the past seasons before he signed with the Houston Rockets, Howard was said to consider the Mark Cuban-owned team. The 30-year-old eight-time NBA All Star Howard also played for the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers in his NBA career.
According to most reports, Howard is close with Chandler Parsons from the Mavericks and the latter will try to recruit him to Dallas. Howard has a player option in his contract with the Rockets for the 2016-2016 season and the big man is expected to opt out of the contract to try to get a lucrative long-term deal, seen as the final big money contract in his NBA career.
Dwight Howard is reportedly looking at a $30 million per season contract and the Mavericks have the salary cap space to give it to him. However, NBA rumors will continue to surround Howard and the Mavericks with lots of teams also having the cap space to sign the big man and the Mavericks also exploring the availability of other top free agents.
