NBA Rumors: D’Angelo Russell rules the Summer League; Good enough to convince OKC to trade Russell Westbrook

By on

DeAngelo Russell is dominating the competition in the 2016 NBA Summer League as the young Los Angeles Lakers prospect continue to impress before his second full season in the NBA begins. However, there are NBA rumors that Russell’s good play this summer will lead to a trade with teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder possibly willing to deal star point guard Russell Westbrook.

The Lakers are participating in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada and Russell has been one of the most impressive players in the camp.

The Lakers are undefeated at 3-0 as of Tuesday with Russell averaging 22.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. This includes a 22-point performance against the Philadelphia 76ers when he hit the game-winning three-pointer.

Russell’s NBA Summer League performance has caught the attention of Lakers fans, who thinks he is ready for a big role in the upcoming 2016-2017 NBA Season.

Russell’s play this summer might also be getting the attention of opposing teams who may be interested in the young point guard. Teams like the Thunder are mentioned in NBA rumors because of the status of Russell Westbrook, who will hit free agency after next season.

OKC is worried that they will lose Westbrook to another team next summer, like they lost superstar Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors this 2016 offseason. Trading Westbrook this summer will get them the most value for their only star in the team.

The Lakers are possible trade partners as OKC demand Russell, another young guy in Julius Randle and maybe future picks from Los Angeles.

For the Lakers, they can make this deal if they can get assurance from Westbrook to re-sign in L.A. when his contract expires. Westbrook is from Long Beach, California and attended high school and college in California. NBA rumors have the OKC PG linked to a possible homecoming to Los Angeles in exchange for their young guys.
