Derrick Rose will become an unrestricted for the first time in his NBA career. According to the latest report, the San Antonio Spurs consider Rose as a potential target in the upcoming free agency if they fail to acquire Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Rose is expected to be one of the most coveted point guards in the upcoming offseason. The Minnesota Timberwolves already expressed their intention to acquire the former MVP, making his reunion with coach Tom Thibodeau possible. However, Rose made it clear that he’s main priority next season is winning, hinting that he’ll be joining a contender team in the upcoming free agency.
“Not even thinking money. I’ve got more than enough money saved. If I stopped playing basketball now, I’ll be all right,” Rose said. “I want to win. I want to be happy and feel at peace with myself wherever I’m at. But being at the negotiating table, you never know. I’m not going to negotiate with people where money is the No. 1 thing I’m asking for. I want to win.”
NBA Rumors: Derrick Rose to San Antonio Spurs
So far, Derrick Rose is not ruling out returning to the New York Knicks. However, with Phil Jacksons’ decision to execute the triangle offense next season, Rose will be an odd fit with the Knicks. Ian Begley of ESPN revealed that the San Antonio Spurs could be interested in adding Rose on their team this summer.
“Toward the end of the regular season, sources told ESPN that the Knicks hadn’t ruled out the possibility of re-signing Rose this summer. It is unclear at this point which other teams besides the Timberwolves view Rose as a potential free-agent target. Some rival executives believe that the San Antonio Spurs may have interest in Rose, depending on how the free-agent market for point guards develops,” Begley wrote.
Since losing in the Western Conference Finals, the Spurs have been frequently linked to Chris Paul, who’ll also become an unrestricted free agent. However, the Spurs need to make lots of sacrifices to acquire the All-Star point guard, including letting go their own incoming free agents. If they fail to make enough cap space to sign Paul, the Spurs may consider Derrick Rose as their second option.
Derrick Rose as Tony Parker’s replacement?
Tony Parker is already on the verge of retirement. As of now, the Spurs should look for his replacement who can play alongside Kawhi Leonard. Rose may not be the best option but he’s someone the Spurs should consider.
In his first season with the Knicks, he averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists on 47.1 percent shooting from the field. His basketball IQ is almost comparable to Parker. However, his health issues remain a major concern, especially after he suffered an injury before the end of the regular season.
