Dirk Nowitzki put a stop to the NBA free agency rumors that he’s retiring from the NBA and announced recently that he’s only opting out from the final year of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks and try to rework a deal to help the franchise rebuild in becoming a title contender the next seasons.
But could the German big man have a change of mind and actually consider signing with another NBA team this offseason and leave Dallas after playing for all of his 18 years in the league with the Mavericks?
“We had one more year on the contract, but I think this is the right thing to do. We’re going to sit with Mark and Donnie obviously over the next few weeks and figure out how to improve this franchise again,” Nowitzki said via a radio show in Dallas.
“Ever since after the championship, we’ve been basically a first-round exit. We’ve been a seven, eight seed. We’ve only won a few playoff games, and obviously the goal was to compete at the highest level in my last couple of years, so there is some moving to do, some thinking, some putting our heads together the next few weeks heading into free agency, heading into the draft. So this is just one move that hopefully starts a chain reaction for us to get better again, to compete really at a high level. We’ll see how it goes.”
It’s not likely that the NBA free agency rumors of Nowitzki leaving Dallas this summer is true, especially after his recent statement. However, there is a small possibility that he considers signing with another team, if that team is a serious title contender and if Nowitzki and the Mavericks franchise and owner Mark Cuban have a cordial separation.
Should the German decide to leave here are the Top 5 destinations for Dirk Nowitzki as he aims to add another title to his illustrious NBA career.
Detroit Pistons – With Andre Drummond down low, Nowitzki will be free to roam and hit those shots from the perimeter. Stan Van Gundy is searching for a stretch four like what he had with the Orlando Magic and getting Nowitzki will give him a forward that can hit the outside shot.
Portland Trail Blazers – The young core of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum needs a leader and Nowitzki will be the veteran presence in the young roster. Nowitzki’s game will nicely fit with Mason Plumlee’s game of hustle and rebounding.
Toronto Raptors – The German in Canada will be a nice fit since the Raptors area already one fo the top teams on defense this season. He will provide leadership and also be a nice second or third scoring option for the team.
Indiana Pacers – Paul George needs help and Nowitzki will give another scoring option for the team
Memphis Grizzlies – Like Indiana, Memphis’ defense is already proven. A front court duo of Marc Gasol and Nowitzki is also formidable and if they can resign Mike Conley this team is bound to make some noise in the Western Conference again.
Which team is best fit for Dirk Nowitzki? The NBA free agency rumors of the German leaving Dallas will continue this offseason until he signs that contract with the Mavericks. Meanwhile, with Nowitzki as a free agent, it’s fun to think about him being in another uniform aside from the Mavericks.
