Dirk Nowitzki is known as Mr. Dallas Mavericks basketball for his long tenure with the team that its difficult to see his name in NBA rumors speculating that he could leave the Texas team after the season.
However, the German big man has a chance to end his NBA career in his terms and could choose to join another NBA squad as he is now a free agent after the Mavericks fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2016 NBA Playoffs.
Will Nowitzki be loyal to the Mavericks to the end and retire in Dallas? Or will he explore signing with another NBA team, where he can chase another NBA championship, this summer?
Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle sounded unsure when discussing Nowitzki’s free agency status, which could add to the NBA rumors that the German might consider moving on to another NBA title contender.
“We’ve got to hope that this isn’t Dirk’s last game as a Maverick. Now he has the option to become a free agent,” Carlisle said to ESPN. “I’m ready to get on a plane and go to Germany and recruit him to be back, but I don’t think we can take that for granted.”
Carlisle added that Nowitzki needed time to think of his decision and said that Nowitzki has a great effect on him as head coach.
“I think we have to give him that kind of respect. He’s done so much for our organization. He’s sacrificed so much. And it’s been such a life-changing experience for me to be around a player of that magnitude for eight years,” Carlise said.
“It’s indescribable. I think he will be back, but I don’t want anybody to just assume anything, because he’s been too great.”
Nowitzki has a player option of about $8M next season if he wants to stay in Dallas.
Nowitzki has been loyal to the Mavericks all the years and has won a championship with the team in 2011. With offseason and his free agency coming, Nowitzki’s name will be included in a number of NBA rumors linking him to other NBA teams. Will he leave Dallas or retire?
